Travelling to Stonehenge
Make the most of your trip to Stonehenge by taking your time to get to the site and enjoying Wiltshire’s beautiful countryside along the way.
On foot
Stonehenge is a 2 mile walk from Amesbury. There are several routes along byways and bridleways, either across Countess Farm or Coneybury Hill. From Amesbury you can use an underpass to get under the A303 roundabout, then use the pavements along the A345 (Countess Road).
You can join a National Trust guided walk to discover ancient places such as the Great Cursus, the Stonehenge Avenue, King Barrow Ridge and the great henge of Durrington Walls. Alternatively, download one of the self-guided walk leaflets from the National Trust website to explore it at your leisure.
For a longer trip you can walk along the Pewsey to Avon trail from Salisbury or if you’re staying in the Winterbournes, there is a footpath from Gomeldon towards Amesbury, followed by some quiet roads. While these are fairly quiet roads, please take care as some of these roads do not have footways.
The National Trust runs a self-guided walking challenge. Each walk varies in length from between 3 km (approx 2 miles) to 9.5 km (approx. 6 miles). Four are located in the Avebury landscape and four in the Stonehenge landscape, and will describe the wildlife, plants and archaeology you may see on your journey.

Using a Family & Friends Railcard, a family of two adults and three children can travel from London Waterloo to Salisbury for only £45.90 (2019 prices; tickets booked in advance). A Family & Friends railcard gives a third off Adult rail fares for up to four adults and 60% off child fares for up to four children. With a Two Together Railcard, two adults can travel from £11.90.
On the bus
The tour bus will take you directly to Stonehenge visitor centre. You can also walk from Amesbury using our map.
