Summer’s here, school’s finished, long days of fun and adventure lie ahead.

However, visits to attractions, meals out and transport can be difficult to afford when household budgets are tight. That’s where Great British Summer Savings, funded by the UK Government can help out.

But that’s not all.

Throughout August children aged 5 to 15 will be able to travel by bus for free.

Children under 11 will need to be accompanied by an adult, but with adult single bus fares capped at £3, what’s not to like?

Aged 11 to 15 and not sure about travelling by bus?

Don’t worry, its not complicated, and bus drivers are there to help you.

First, decide where you want to go, then plan your journey using our journey planner. Next, let a parent or guardian know where you are going, and when you expect to be back. If you are aged 14 or 15 it might be a good idea to take some proof of your age, just in case.

When you want to make your journey arrive at the bus stop in good time, and signal to the bus driver by sticking your arm out as your bus approaches.

Some bus stops are served by several different buses, so check the display on the front to make sure its the bus you want, but don’t be afraid to flag it down anyway and check with the driver.

When you board the bus tell the driver where you are going and they will issue a ticket, for free!

Many buses have displays inside showing the name of the next stop, and a voice announcement, so you know when you’re getting near your stop. As the bus approaches the bus stop you want, ring the bell once, using the button marked “Stop”. There is no need to ring the bell more than once as a sign lights up in the driver’s cab to remind them. Remain in your seat until the bus has stopped, but once it has, leave the bus quickly and safely.

Remember, bus drivers are there to help you, so it’s fine ask them where you catch the bus back home; they’ll be pleased to show you.

Lets all make the most of summer!
