Your bus journey starts before the bus arrives, and that’s why we’re investing in our bus stops and bus shelters, to improve your whole journey.
Most of our bus shelters are around 25-years old and approaching the end of their life, so with funding from UK Government we are beginning a programme of upgrades and replacements.
Every bus shelter will be thoroughly inspected by our contractor, and a recommendation will be made whether to repair or replace, depending on its condition.
Where we replace a shelter, our contractor will dismantle the old one carefully. Some parts will be put into stock to repair other shelters of the same type, while anything which can’t be reused will be recycled. Occasionally we can find further use for good condition shelters, and we have already moved two to a town council sports ground for a second life.
Our new bus shelters are designed to blend in with their surroundings as their long-life anodised finish reflect the surroundings, while giving a sleek modern appearance. The seats have handles to assist the less mobile, while the lighting is provided by low energy LEDs which are built into the frame of the shelter and can be powered by solar panels if there is no mains supply at a location.
We’ve also instigated a programme of shelter cleaning across our networks, which will improve the waiting environment for passengers.
But we’re not just improving bus shelters, we are improving bus stops too. In a large rural county, like Wiltshire, with over 7,000 bus stops, it’ll never be possible to have a shelter at every one, so many will continue to just have a bus stop sign, and at the busier stops a printed departure list too. We will be assessing and replacing signs and poles as necessary.
With so many bus stops and shelters in our area this project will take 4 years to complete, and we’re sorry that we can’t get to everyone’s bus stop straight away. For more information click HERE
